Founded in 1965,
Cambria is the graduate football team of
Strathclyde
University.
Cambria incidentally, is the ancient Briton name for Strathclyde. Over the years
Cambria has provided a football haven for many graduates and the present is no exception with the majority of the club consisting of former
Strathclyde
University students.
The club run two teams, who both play at Stepps. Training is held there at
18:15 on Wednesday evenings throughout the season. The teams both play in the Scottish Amateur Football League, the firsts consolidated in the Premier, the seconds in Non Premier Section One. Altogether five people are involved in the management and training of the teams, while the firsts are also supported by a physiotherapist.
While
Cambria is first and foremost an ambitious football club, it has always generated close camaraderie among its players, and has close links with the current university teams. Socially, the club thrives with race nights, player of the year events, annual tours to far flung places like
Newcastle,
Liverpool,
Manchester and almost weekly touring of local clubs and bars in the city.
The club is predominantly funded by sponsorship from the Snaffle Bit pub with local business, annual subscriptions, match fees and fund raising accounting for any shortfall.
